Attachment / Installation

How do the skirts attach to the lift tables?
The lift table skirt comes with a 3 inch flap located at the top and the bottom. At the top you would attach the flap to the vertical edge of your lift table and then use a 1 inch washer with a fastener and bold the skirt to the lift table.

Does the skirt attach to the bottom of the lift table?
Most customers choose not to attach the skirting to the bottom of the lift table. In fact, most of the lift tables have a larger top size and a smaller bottom size so it actually is not possible to attach the bottom. The skirt simply rests on the floor and is not required to be attached at the bottom.

My lift table has a very large top. How do I get the skirt over that?
You would use separator Velcro when a lift table has a large platform which is welded or bolted onto the actual scissor lift table. In these instances you cannot install the skirt from the top down so we add a Velcro split which allows you to wrap it around and then Velcro it back together. The Velcro split runs from top to bottom.

What size is the flat bar mounts that hold up the skirt?
There is a 3" flange pocket on the top and bottom of the skirt that attaches to the side of the lift table as shown below. In this pocket you will slide in a flat steel bar that we provide and use the Tek screws that are also provided to bolt the skirt to the lift table every 12". If you do not choose flat steel bar mounting then the skirt will still have the pocket for you to mount it using other methods.

What does the vent do and is it needed?
The vent panel on a lift table skirt which is located at the top of the skirt allows the expulsion of air from inside of the scissor lift table as it raises and lowers. This is required especially for fast-moving lift tables so that the bellows does not "puff" outwards like a balloon. Please also note that the vent must be installed at the top rather than the bottom.

Features

Does this stitched skirt come in all black and not the safety yellow?
Yes same price for all black, all yellow and black and yellow. Other colors are available at a premium price.

Do they come in standard stocked sizes?
No there are no stocked skirts. They are made to order but can ship in about 2-3 work days if you ask us to rush them. We would need to confirm an actual ship date if you do have a rush order so please consult with AKON.

I need only one side of scissor lift protected. Can I get a single sided skirt?
Yes the lift table bellows can be single sides, double sided, triple sided or the most common 4 sided.

What is the stack up / collapsed height when the bellows is lowered?
If you need to know the collapsed height of your lift table skirting please inquire with your Akon sales contact they will calculate that for you.

What is the difference between internal and external fold?
Below you can see that the folds of the bellows can face outward, or inward depending on what style you want.
Please be aware that internal fold bellows need adequate room facing inwards for the folds.
For instance, if you have a 50" x 50" top size and a 50" x 50" bottom lift table size then an internal fold will not work.
Pit lifts that are mounted in the floor generally always need an internal fold for them to work.
Internal folds have the smallest foot print for conserving space.
External folds are the most common and best option for when you are unsure that an internal fold will work.

When are steel wires needed?
Stiffening wires are not needed on the vast majority of skirts. They were popular back in the early 70's and have stuck around ever since. While they do add rigidity to the skirting they are prone to pop out of the end of the skirt once the steel wears a hole through the Vinyl from friction like the image below. These wires then present a trip hazard as they catch the pant legs of the workers. We do however offer wires upon request as we are aware that some customers would like them. A better method of fabrication is to use a Thermic Bonded Skirt in which it has plastic flat bars in every other fold for rigidity.

Other Questions

How well does the vinyl hold up in welding?
The vinyl material will hold up to hot flying sparks. Keep in mind there are different kinds of sparks. There are sparks from grinding metal which the standard Vinyl skirts work great for, and then there are sparks which come from other work processes which are very large and sometimes molten. Light welding which is not taking place directly on top of the lift table should not damage the skirt. If a hot spark hits it, then it may burn a small hole in it but it will not start on fire as it is fire retardant. For heavy welding applications, you would want our silicone coated fiberglass material we use for weld slag. It cannot be damaged from welding. It is about double the price however.

My little table skirting needs to be modified can it be sent back for modification?
A stitched lift table skirt once produced can be modified if you need it to be taller or shorter. We cannot however make it wider or narrower because of the way that they are produced.

Does OSHA approve these skirts?
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulates workplace safety around pinch points to reduce occupational injuries. According to the OSHA definition, pinch points are points on presses and other workplace equipment where workers could get a finger or other body part caught between two moving parts. The OSHA warns that pinch points can cause severe injuries, including amputation, and regulates work practices for workers exposed to pinch points. Scissor lift tables have “Scissors” which are a very dangerous pinch points. Thus, if the lift table is not properly shrouded with a lift table skirt then OSHA will issue your facility a fine. This includes mobile scissor lift tables.
